The state of digitalisation in temperature-controlled logistics

Our survey of 32 logistics companies shows that digitalisation is becoming increasingly important, although more than half of the companies do not have a digital strategy. The participants indicated that the lack of suitable employees is the main obstacle to digitalisation. Investments are focused on improving core processes and customer retention. On the other hand, many companies are not yet investing in areas such as real-time data and data analytics.​



Logistics companies are under pressure to both provide more transparency and offer lower prices. Digitalising supply chains should both increase overall productivity and improve transparency by making it easier to share data between the parties involved. The SVTL (Swiss Association for Temperature Controlled Logistics; www.svtl.ch), whose members are primarily involved in food logistics, wanted to understand the digital maturity of its members. To this end, the SVTL commissioned Eraneos to conduct a survey among its members to determine their level of digitalisation. We wanted to find out how companies assess their digitalisation capabilities. Where are they investing? Are they pursuing an explicit digital strategy? In addition, we wanted to learn the stories behind the numbers. To this end, we surveyed SVTL members and conducted in-depth interviews with six members.
